Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to set up 2x800 MW Coal based Thermal Power Project at Udangudi in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. Super critical technology will be adopted. The land requirement is estimated as 939 acres. Coal requirement is estimated as 7.5 million TPA. Indigenous / imported coal will be used as fuel. Water requirement is estimated as 3,20,000 m3/hr, which will be obtained from sea. Once through system of cooling will be adopted.

Preliminary works are completed. Public hearing are over. Expert committee/MOEF has recommended for clearance for the Project. Ministry has to accord to clearance. SEIAA has already recommended CRZ clearance for the project and port site. National Committee has to accord CRZ clearance for port and site utilities. Preliminary works such as the site grading and construction of compound wall are under progress. UPCL has already called for tender for consultancy works. The project originally envisaged to have BHEL as stakeholder is now will be developed without BHEL. TN Government will set up the project on its own land and will have mega power project status which will also bring down the costs. As of May 2012, the project is in planning stage.
