Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to set up 2x500 MW Tuticorin TPP, Stage-IV at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The project involves setting up of a 1000 MW (2x500 MW) coal based thermal power plant as an expansion stage IV adjacent to the existing Tuticorin Thermal Power Station Complex. About 150 acres of land belonging to Tuticorin Port Trust has been identified adjacent to the existing plant. Another 100 acres has been identified for routing of cooling water channel, coal conveyor and colony. The site is reported to be low lying. The site falls near the Tuticorin Bay-Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. Once through system of cooling using seawater will be adopted. Sea water will be drawn from Gulf of Mannar. The sweet water requirement will be met from Thamirabarani river. Coal requirement is estimated as 4.6 million TPA, which will be obtained from Mahanadi Coalfields.
