Tulsyan NEC is planning to take up setting up 2×35 MW Captive Imported Coal Based Thermal Power Plant at village Sinthoornatham, in Gummidipoondi Taluk, in Thiruvallur District , in Tamil Nadu. The power produced will be captively consumed to Steel Plant located at about 4.0 Km from the site. Land requirement will be 40 acres which is a single crop agriculture land and under possession. Imported Coal required will be 0.34 MTPA, which will be obtained from Indonesia. Ash content in coal will be 9 % and Sulphur content 0.12 % (maximum). Quantity of Fly ash and bottom ash to be generated will be 0.0248 MTPA and 0.00584 MTPA respectively. Air cooled condenser will be used for condensate cooling. Water requirement will be 92 KLD which will be met from harvested rain water.

Vainateya Power, a Lanco group company is planning to set up a 1320 MW coal fired thermal project in Tuticorin near port in Tamil Nadu. The plant will use both domestic and imported coal. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 26,400 million.
Empee Group is planning to set up a 2x660 MW coal based thermal power plant in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs. 65000 million. The project is in planning stage and likely to source coal from India, where it is drawing coal for its 80 MW coal based plants. The company plans to complete the project by 2016.
