Suryadev Alloys and Power is setting up a 3x35 MW coal based thermal power plant in Sirupulapettain in New Gummidipoondi in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. Land required for the project is around 90 acres apart from the existing land of 29 acres, The project involves setting up of a CFBC boiler with a regenerative cycle design and will use air cooled condensing system. The project also involves setting up a 18 MW cogeneration system with heat generated from steel making flue gases. Water requirement will be met from ground water.
The project is nearing completion.
Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to set up 2x800 MW Coal based Thermal Power Project at Udangudi in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. Super critical technology will be adopted. The land requirement is estimated as 939 acres. Coal requirement is estimated as 7.5 million TPA. Indigenous / imported coal will be used as fuel. Water requirement is estimated as 3,20,000 m3/hr, which will be obtained from sea. Once through system of cooling will be adopted.

Preliminary works are completed. Public hearing are over. Expert committee/MOEF has recommended for clearance for the Project. Ministry has to accord to clearance. SEIAA has already recommended CRZ clearance for the project and port site. National Committee has to accord CRZ clearance for port and site utilities. Preliminary works such as the site grading and construction of compound wall are under progress. UPCL has already called for tender for consultancy works. The project originally envisaged to have BHEL as stakeholder is now will be developed without BHEL. TN Government will set up the project on its own land and will have mega power project status which will also bring down the costs. As of May 2012, the project is in planning stage.
TNEB plans in Uppur near Thiruvadanai 2x800 thermal power project in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 96,000 million. The commissioning schedule is slated for 2015-
About 1200 acres of lands have been identified in Thiruvadanai, Ramanathapuram District. Approval of the GOTN has been sought for. The District Collector/ Ramanathapuram has also been requested to reserve the lands for TNEB for establishing the Project TANGEDCO have commenced preliminary field survey works and the same has been completed and the Report is under preparation.
