Dhopave Coastal Power Ltd - a special purpose vehicle promoted by Maharashtra State Power Generation Co Ltd is setting up a 3200 MW coal based thermal power project in Dhopave in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra with an investment of Rs. 208,000 million. The project is likely to go operational in December 2016 in phases. Land acquisition is in progress. As per present planning, order for main plant is expected by March, 2011. The trial operation of Unit 1 is planned by June 2015 followed by Unit 2 by December 2015, Unit 3 by June 2016 and Unit 4 by December 2016, as per the website of MAHAGENCO. The power utility has planned to use the coal blocks - Macchakata and Mahanadi, allotted to Mahaguj Collieries Ltd. (MGCL) by the Ministry of Coal, for the project. Lanco Infratech Ltd. was awarded a contract on Built-Own-Operate basis in February 2009. However, giving due consideration to the quantum of coal expected to be available from Machhakata Coal Block now it is proposed to go in for installation of 3 x 660 MW Units instead of 4 x 800 MW units at Dhopawe. To this extent, the proposal for in-principle approval has been submitted to GoM vide letter dated 13.10.2010. The company has awarded i-maritime Consultancy Private Limited (i-maritime) the assignment of preparing the “Techno Economic Feasibility Report” for the coal import facility.
